The Starting Point for Safe and Confident Practice

Before learning how to support birth, teach classes or work with families, a practitioner needs something more fundamental:

The ability to think, respond and communicate appropriately in complex human situations.

The Foundations programme develops this professional understanding.

It does not teach scripts or memorised responses.
It prepares you to act safely within your role.

All learners complete Foundations before progressing to a specialist pathway.

What You Will Explore

Professional identity and role

What a support practitioner is — and is not — responsible for.
How to remain helpful without becoming responsible for outcomes.

Safety and the maternity system

How your role fits alongside NHS care and why appropriate signposting matters.

Communication and listening

Supporting without directing, reassuring without dismissing, and handling differing perspectives.

Trauma-aware support

Why reassurance can sometimes increase distress and how to respond safely.

Inclusion and working with families

Supporting different needs, perspectives and family dynamics respectfully.

Sustainable practice

Maintaining boundaries, managing contact and protecting both yourself and families.

What this programme develops

By the end of Foundations you will be able to:

  • Understand your professional role and its limits

  • Communicate supportively without giving advice outside your scope

  • Respond appropriately to anxiety and uncertainty

  • Work alongside healthcare professionals safely

  • Recognise emotional distress and respond sensitively

  • Maintain boundaries while remaining supportive

  • Avoid dependency relationships

  • Understand when to step back and signpost

Why Foundations is Required

Specialist skills only become safe when built on appropriate judgement.
